Looking for the Greatest Hits
As a fan of the Precision Matters column
by Gerald Davis, I recommend that our
Solid Works value-added reseller sales team
share your columns with customers and
training attendees.
Where can current or past columns be
looked up? I didn’t see the archive on www.

Clearing the Air on Lift Trucks
Good of the publication to tackle this topic [“No-, low-emissions lift trucks clear the air,” ;e FABRICATOR, August 2013, p. 76], but clarifications are needed. Perhaps it
would be good to clear the air about these.
In particular, it should be noted that these diesel fume
exhaust regulations came about because the exhaust’s
constituents, such as particulate matter and NOx, generally are considered bad for humans. ;erefore, the newest regulations address the need to reduce these even
further. A link to cancer is not the reason. No direct link
has been established either medically or legally.
Also it should be noted that the National Clean Diesel
Campaign (NCDC) has not put out the Tier 4 schedule, but
the Environmental Protection Agency itself has. ;e NCDC
program is independent of the regulatory framework.
Another item to address is the discussion of the “tran-
sition plan” and “flexibility” guidelines. ;ese also are op-
tional programs. ;ey allow for a number of prior “tier”
newer “tier.” Some companies use them and some don’t.
Fork lift engine manufacturers would not need to submit
their plans to the EPA unless they decided to participate
in this program. ;ere is no need for engine manufacturers to submit their plans to the EPA if they are not
participating.
Finally, Toyota Material Handling is mentioned as
meeting EPA standards on their 8-series models with the
use of two engines, the 4Y and 1 DZ-III. ;is is puzzling as
the three-way catalyst;technologies are for use on spark-ignited engines and not diesel.

Editor’s Note: ;e 4Y and 1 DZ-III engines should not have
been mentioned in the section of the story covering diesel
engine advancements. ;e editors regret the error.
Knowledge on Press-related Stress?
Do you know of any survey or measurement method to
evaluate the mental stress on die setters?
Flying dies all day has to be kind of stressful, and I was
wondering how you measure that. Any guidance you can
share would be helpful.

Editor’s Note: While it may be helpful to find some type of
evaluation method given in other high-stress fields, such as
air tra;c controllers, emergency room personnel, or police
o;cers, we aren’t aware of any that specifically apply to
pressroom workers. If any of ;e FABRICATOR’s readers
have any ideas, we’ll pass them along.
