Synchronous press brake
The Piranha Pro2, a synchronous
twin-cylinder press brake, handles
most general-purpose fabricating, from
precision thin gauge to heavy plate.
Features include two vertically
mounted hydraulic cylinders, synchronized to maintain 0.0004-in. parallelism and repeatability; linear feedback devices on each side of the
brake; high-speed rapid approach and
return; a variety of CNC options from
digital to graphical; several backgauge
options, including multiaxis gauging
systems; and multiple safety options.
Models are available from 65 to
500 tons in bed lengths from 6 to 16 ft.

Abrasive jet machine
The 2652 abrasive jet machining center
from OMAX® provides a compact footprint for short-run part production, JIT
manufacturing, and prototype development. According to the company, the
machine decreases setup times while
achieving fast cutting speeds.
The Windows®-based control soft-
ware with Intelli-MAX® technologies
allows operators to program traditionally complex techniques. Users can
machine parts directly from pre-existing CAD drawings or .DXF files or create drawings via the built-in software.
The Tilt-A-Jet® nozzle allows for
almost zero taper in most materials. It
compensates for the natural taper produced by abrasive jet machining. The
automated adjustments then move the
taper to scrap material, resulting in
parts with perfectly square edges,
according to the company.

2-D laser cutting system
Mazak Optonics Corp. has introduced
the Hyper Turbo-X laser system
designed for high-speed cutting of 2-D
parts in up to 1-in.-thick steel.
The machine includes a new bed
concept, called a takumi frame, which
is an enclosed box-frame design
throughout. The tabbed laser-cut
sides and cross members are connected with a series of tie rods, which
quickly dampen vibrations from internal and external sources.
Smooth acceleration and a top traverse rate of 1,969 IPM are accomplished through noncontact linear
motors, which both drive and guide
the axis motions on a thin film of air.
The X axis uses two guides and
motors, while the Y and Z axes contain a single guide and motor.
Antifriction linear roller assemblies
support the table and part loads.
The system processes a range of
materials and thicknesses with no
operator intervention. Cutting
parameters are maintained through
the use of a six-torch changer magazine combined with a 10-nozzle
changer to reconfigure the setup automatically via part program. In one
minute the machine inspects the nozzle tip, cycles the tip over a grinding
wheel and wire brush unit if necessary, and calibrates the focal length of
the new cutting head configuration.
The PREview CNC reads ahead
through several commands, predicting
problem areas such as tight corners
and intricate shapes and adjusting the
cutting parameters for each shape.
