Roll forming guide
Taylor & Francis has published the Roll
Forming Handbook, a 556-page book
edited and co-authored by George
Halmos, president of Delta Eng. Inc.
The book, available from the FMA
Bookstore, provides practical information for roll formers and serves as
an educational textbook. The coauthors’ contributions are based on
their own experience, combined with
the input of many roll and equipment
designers, operators, setup personnel,
supervisors, and product designers.
In its 15 chapters, the book provides practical details about roll forming mills, presses, and die accelerators,
as well as the application of different
secondary operations in the line. It
contains a 100-plus-page roll design
chapter; detailed descriptions of the
materials used in roll forming; separate
chapters on lubrication, coil processing, material handling, and plant layout; and recommendations for part
design, equipment installation, roll
setup, and maintenance, including 21
pages on troubleshooting.
The book also studies the behavior
of metal strip during roll forming and
provides practical details on acquiring
roll forming lines, education, training, safety, and methods to help
increase efficiency and case studies.
The last chapter deals with unusual, new, and future roll forming technologies, including tension roll forming, variable cross-section roll forming, and hot roll forming. The book
also contains imperial and metric conversion tables of the most frequently
used units used by roll formers.
The book provides equations to calculate the number of passes required to
form a product, the diameters of the
mill shafts, and other values presently
established by “educated guesses.”
