DFX system allows validation of design
for manufacturability, assembly
Geometric Ltd. has introduced Geometric DFX, a stand-alone application
for carrying out Design for X validation of product designs. Powered by the
company’s DFMPro® design for manufacturability system, it uses the CGM 3-D
modeling kernel from Spatial Corp.
In DFX, X represents various downstream process checks related to manufacturability, assembly, quality, warranty, penalty, serviceability, environment,
and reliability. Incorporating DFX guidelines early in the product development
phase can help reduce defects, cut down rework, eliminate waste, shorten time
to market, and save costs, according to the company.
The system enables designers to validate 3-D CAD data automatically during
the design stage, using about 100 design rules based on global best practices
for these downstream issues. Manufacturing processes currently supported include machining, casting, injection molding, and sheet metal fabrication for
such applications as automotive, consumer durables, aerospace, high-tech,
medical equipment, and contract electronics manufacturing.

Manual straight cutting torches feature
ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has introduced a new line of manual straight
cutting torches as part of its new Elite series of gas apparatus products. The
torches can cut up to 10 in. when using acetylene and up to 12 in. with alternate fuel gases.
The torches feature the patented Elite Swirl Head Injector design. It mixes
high-pressure, preheated oxygen and lower-pressure fuel gas to create a vacuum, producing an entrainment zone that pulls gas through the torch. This
minimizes the risk of damaging flashback, the company states.
The torches can work with multiple fuel gas types. Users can change the
torches from a positive-pressure universal mixer to a universal injector by
changing the cutting tip from acetylene to any alternative fuel gas. This eliminates the need to change the mixer to match the fuel gas or to have different
cutting torches for different fuels. The three-tube, inline design provides for
increased gas flow and permits a higher cutting capacity in acetylene and alternative fuel gases, the company reports.

Software performs FEA simulation
of roll forming process
Ubeco Profil has developed an interface to the LS-Dyna FEA system from Livermore Software Corp. The FEA simulation of the roll forming process enables
the designer to validate and optimize the roll form design at an early stage, before the rolls are manufactured, to help ensure the final product meets specified needs.
The result of the FEA calculation is a CAD drawing of the profile, which can
be dimensioned and checked if the deformation is within the allowances. If
not, the design has to be modified. This happens before the rolls are manufactured. If the sheet is prepunched, bore holes and cutouts can be defined in a
CAD drawing. After roll tool modification, the FEA simulation can be restarted
at any roll forming stand.
